A signature Australian country garden
The Edna Walling Garden at Markdale
Designed in 1949 by renowned landscape gardener Edna Walling, Markdale’s five-acre garden is celebrated as one of Australia's great country gardens. Walling’s redesign brought her distinctive style to the Southern Tablelands—blending native and exotic plants, dry stone walls, curving paths, and a natural flow that links house, garden, and the rolling landscape beyond.
Wisteria-covered pergolas, golden elms, silver birch, and drifts of roses sit beside open lawns and a tranquil lake. The garden remains remarkably true to Walling’s vision, enhanced over time with thoughtful replanting, a bog garden, and new garden rooms.
Guests staying at Markdale have unlimited access to this beautifully preserved and inspiring space—a rare opportunity to experience one of Walling’s finest NSW works firsthand.
